Chapter Ten
He handled that news far better than she expected. âWhy are you not freaking out?â she asked as they left the scene and headed toward her hotel.
âAbout which part? You lifting me like I weighed nothing? Or how about you jumping over the side of a bridge with me in your arms? Or maybe the fact that you swim faster than any Olympic athlete Iâve ever seen. Oh, and letâs also call out that cops forget who they are when youâre around. Is that the part I should be freaking out about?â
She shook her head. âThat happens to most men when Iâm around. Itâs quite refreshing, to be honest, that you donât act like a lovesick fool.â Although she certainly wouldnât complain if he acted like he liked her.
At the barest minimum.
Hunter stopped walking when they reached the canopy stretching over the entrance to her hotel.
âLook, Artemis, I have to go. I need to get some sleep and Iâ¦I just need to go.â
He was leaving? She grabbed his arm. âYou canât leave. At least, not alone.â
âBefore you came along, I was alone pretty much all the time.â
âThat doesnât make it right. Or safe.â
Sighing, he said, âAre we really going to have this conversation?â
She stabbed her finger at the bridge in the distance. âThe driver of that van was trying to run you down. I donât need three thousand years of experience to understand that in a collision between a human body and a motor vehicle, the human body would most definitely lose.â And she would lose Hunter before she even really had him.
That was an interestingâand chillingâthought.
Dropping his hand onto her shoulder, he gave it what was probably supposed to be a reassuring squeeze. âI appreciate your concern, but this isnât the first time someone has been gunning for me.â
âIt isnât?â
He shook his head. âEvery now and then, a disgruntled perp decides revenge is better than accepting defeat and moving on with his life. Itâs just part of the job. Now that Iâm aware of the threat, Iâll be more diligent.â
âBut you donât even know what the threat is.â
âIâll be fine, Artemis. Good night.â
She wasnât used to being blown off. In fact, she couldnât think of a single time in her immortal life that someone had dismissed her quite so succinctly as Hunter was doing at this moment.
She crossed her arms. âAt least let me drive you home.â
This sigh was resigned. âIâd ratherââ
âI insist.â
It was obvious he was considering arguing, but after a few beats of silence, he gave in with a bitten off, âFine.â
This ride on her bike was entirely different from the last one. Despite their close proximity, there was a chasm between them. Instead of wrapping his arms around her waist, Hunter left them resting on his thighs, and as they were tooling through busy city streets, she couldnât even open up the throttle to force him to grab onto her.
His legs werenât touching her, either. Heâd shifted back on the seat, leaving a good six inches space between his thighs and her backside.
